Camille Durham, widowed by the war in France, returns to her husband's home in England to discover mysterious goings on in Kirkham Hall. A week after her arrival she finds a handsome stranger in her drawing room, shot and in need of her help. Lord Lucius Tapscott swears that it was the work of a jealous husband, but Camille suspects that there is more to it. Is it really smugglers that are haunting her halls or is something more sinister going on? And is Lord Tapscott the reckless rake he appears to be or something else instead?
