The Heart That Lies by April Munday
In Regency England no one is quite what they appear to be and lies are put on when one dresses each morning. In the summer of 1811 the Earl of Meldon is trying to unmask the murderer of his fellow spy, without success. He is distracted from this task by the arrival of a young woman in his house. The last thing Meldon wants is another distraction from fighting the French, let alone a distraction clever enough to work out what he’s doing. When a French agent proposes marriage to his guest, Meldon has to take action.
The death of her brother leaves Lady Anna alone and homeless. England in 1811 is a dangerous place for a woman on her own, but Anna has to make her way on her wits. Even her active imagination can’t predict how dangerous her life in London will be.
