It's 1865 and James Stratton is scratching a living, writing erotic stories for anonymous clients in Holywell Street, the center of London's print pornography trade. In his spare time, he tries to break into serious journalism and he teaches his prostitute friend and sometime lover, Annie, to read. His life is altered forever when one of his anonymous clients contacts him with a view to engaging his services on a more personal level. Facilitated by the mysterious Mrs. Shaw, James meets with the customer and is flabbergasted to find that she is a young woman of rank and station—Lady Augusta Heathcote.
