The Silent Land by Graham Joyce
In a mysterious world of isolation and fear, award-winning author Graham Joyce spins a hypnotically dark and emotional story about a young married couple trapped by an avalanche in the remote French Pyrenees.

High in the mountains above a picturesque French ski resort, Jake and Zoe Bennett are alone on the early morning slopes when a nightmare crashes down upon them. With a sudden roar they are buried under a powerful flash avalanche. Miraculously, the young couple are able to dig their way out from under the snow - only to discover the world they've known has been evacuated and is devoid of any living soul. The town is empty. Restaurants stand frozen in time, with uncooked meat and vegetables left on the countertops. Cell phones and land lines are useless.

Jake and Zoe are left to face a terrifying situation alone - cut off from the world and trapped by a massive storm, with an even larger, catastrophic avalanche threatening to bury the town itself. They find that complete isolation brings fear...but also beauty. Zoe and Jake have the world to themselves, a vast playground with no rules, and yet the silent land they occupy also begins to deliver unsettling events neither one can ignore. As the days wear on, they are forced to confront frightening possibilities - and harrowing occurrences - as they attempt to survive, to understand the love they share, and to escape the ghostly landscape they now inhabit.
