Jenny Martin of Harper Falls, Virginia began her life with all odds against her. An orphan, she grew into a lonely teenager who became a mother married to an abusive man. Now divorced, she struggles to regain her self-esteem and to establish her independence. Disillusioned by past relationships, Jenny decides to avoid romance. Her ambition is to get a decent job that will enable her to take care of her seven-year-old daughter and to attend college to establish a professional career. After her daughter. Chloe, witnessed her mother's abuse, Jenny is determined to erase those memories and be a better role model to her child. She wants Chloe to grow up surrounded by love and believing that a woman doesn't need a man to define her or her happiness. When handsome Laurence Strong, a brilliant and well-to-do architect, returns home to Harper Falls from Chicago to care for his ailing father, he opens a branch office of his architectural firm. Through a recommendation from friends. Nina and Addison Wagner, Jenny lands the job of office assistant at Strong's office. Jenny is thrilled with her new job and the excellent salary and benefits that Strong provides. However, she soon learns that Strong is quick-tempered and arrogant. His angry flare-ups on the job remind her of her abusive ex-husband's temperament. She wonders if she should give up her job to escape the tear and stress that she endures at times while working for Strong.
