If I Could Be With You by Mary Mamie Hardesty
What happens when the boy next door grows up and moves to New York City? If you’re a teacher like Hannah Miller, you sign up for summer professional development and plan your first visit. But when Charlie McMillan comes home after years away a few weeks before her trip, he’s not the young boy she remembered. Taken aback at the heat between them and caught off guard by the signals he seems to be sending despite the ring on his finger, she begins to wonder how she’ll survive the temptations she’ll no doubt encounter during five weeks in his Queens apartment without his wife.

When she arrives in the city to find Charlie more flirtatious than ever, she’s overcome with questions and insecurities. Should she believe him when he explains his marriage isn’t what it seems? And if she believes, does it make the crazy attraction to a younger man acceptable? Is she ready for something new after recently leaving a not so healthy relationship, and if she is, does it even matter when she can’t control the effect he has on her body?

As Hannah explores her passions and a connection that goes beyond the physical with a man who has loved her since childhood, she comes to know herself in ways she never expected, but just when she thinks she knows what she wants, her world is turned upside down and she leaves the city, heading home to start her life anew. Is the separation really the end of the dreams she built with Charlie or is there hope for their future?
