Ebbe Finnegan is an orphaned young woman about to be adopted into a family... The Family. A rather lonely art-school dropout, Ebbe falls in lust at first sight with a regular at the restaurant where she works. When his father mysteriously discourages her crush on Sebastian and nudges her toward his brother Valerian, Ebbe is quickly drawn into a love and a world like she has never known. The romance takes her from San Francisco to Follina, Italy, and to places in between that no nice girl should be, doing things that no nice girl should do. Though happy to have a family again, she is frustrated by the secrets surrounding everything and everyone, and starts keeping a few of her own. Guided and tempted by Sebastian, loved and tortured by Valerian, Ebbe struggles to reconcile her love for these people and her fear of the decadent but violent life into which she is wading deeper and deeper.
