Fortune's Hazard by Cate Charleston
London, 1817. Outside a gambling hell Edward Leighton is murdered by his opponent in a game of Hazard after losing the last of his wife’s fortune. Widowed Georgiana and her young son Daniel must face destitution unless she finds the courage to accept an offer of sanctuary from an unknown benefactor – her dead mother’s childhood friend Miss Charlotte Mandeville, who lives on Exmoor. Fearful and anxious that she has done the right thing, they are escorted to their new home by Miss Mandeville’s nephew, the handsome and forbiddingly hostile Guy who is a hero of the Peninsular Wars and Waterloo. The friends whom Georgiana meets at Garlands, Miss Mandeville’s comfortable house, seem at first welcoming and sincere but she soon detects mysterious contradictions and tensions between them. Her courage will be tested to the full as she comes to recognise the heinous plot which has been laid to entrap her, a plot which will dramatically unfold and lead to the identity of her husband’s murderer. Everything now depends on a crucial decision and Georgiana must make a daring gamble of her own. For if she is to save herself and her beloved son she must choose the right person to trust – and the right one to love.
