When Lydia Somerville, an affluent baker's daughter, is jilted at the altar by Richard Claremont, Duke of Chester; a notorious, wayward rake, she thought her life was over. But worse was to come. As Lydia tried to forget Chester and the latest gossip, casting doubts on her respectable reputation, Robert Somerville, her widowed father suddenly died of an heart attack. Heartbroken after losing her true love, then grief stricken over the death of her beloved Papa, Lydia fled to Yorkshire, in the North of England, determined to make a new life for herself.

Two years later Lydia, with the proceeds from her father's will, is the successful owner of a prosperous cake shop, with the patronage of the Duke of Oxbridge, to add prestige to her business. However, when she displayed an elaborate wedding cake in her shop window, it caught the eye of Lady Charlotte, a rich, spoilt heiress recently betrothed to an handsome Duke. When the Duke called in to purchase the cake, Lydia was shocked to see her first love the Duke of Chester. He was betrothed to Lady Charlotte Cringlewood and it was his wedding that the wedding cake was for.

Chester is equally shocked to see Lydia. He still has a passionate yearning for the beautiful young bride he left at the altar. Lydia is equally transfixed by the handsome duke and his muscular physique. But scared of being hurt again she hides behind a frosty, business like exterior.

When Lydia is pulled into an explosive love triangle with the Duke and Lady Charlotte, she has to fight for everything she has fought for. Her independence, her business and her respectable reputation. But how long before her defences are broken down, by the brooding, sexual passion of a Duke, who is about to marry the wrong woman!
