1887 women had few choices. Get married, live with your parents, or get married. Did I mention get married? Elizabeth was still single when her parents died unexpectedly. She and her sister managed fairly well on their inheritance until Beth Ann became pregnant.
Elizabeth tried to be as supportive as she could under the circumstances but when Beth Ann needed prolonged hospitalization before the birth, their inheritance took a hit. When Beth Ann died during childbirth, Elizabeth was not only faced with the hospital expense, a child to care for, funeral expenses, but now she faced shunning by the community.
Her only option was to find a job and raise her niece; alone. When Bethany was three, she changed her last name and moved to another state becoming a housekeeper while withholding the fact that she had a daughter hiding in her room.
That is when the fun really begins.
