Following the death of her estranged grandmother and her mother’s consequent emotional collapse, Karen embarks on a search to find her missing father.
Through the discovery of her grandmother’s journal, she instead uncovers different and more startling truth about her past: a mother who is part Aborigine and an aunt who is a child of the stolen generation. Armed with the knowledge of her own Aboriginal heritage, she travels to the small Australian town where sixty years ago, her grandmother outraged local opinion by falling in love with an Aboriginal man.
In the town of Black Rock, she inadvertently affects the lives of a disparate group of people. As their own stories unfold, Karen finds both her past and her future.
