The Baker's Dozen by Ben Rhodes
Leigh McKay has a private investigation agency that specializes in providing security. It’s not a large agency, but she does employ usually about twenty. From time to time, she added a few. Sometimes, a member of the staff decided to look for greener pastures, or someone willing to pay more.

Though Leigh was never on any police department, occasionally she did provide some consultant services for them. They liked the way she got results. She liked the extra money, especially during lean times. The fact that the relationship she built with them was a nice thing. She never expected any more than the contract fee, but it did help to know a few on the local departments.

She was well trained and a strictly business type woman who insisted that the men she worked with kept their distance. Those who tried to get overly friendly with her were quickly reminded of it. Moreover, the reminder was not something that went away overnight.

Now she’s been asked to help solve a murder of a famous wealthy man while the media go on a frenzy trying to find out what details they can report to their readers. Almost immediately, she has a dozen suspects. She needs to eliminate all but one. As her partner pointed out, they don’t want to eliminate them all. If they did that, they’d have no one to charge with the murder.

At least ten of the suspects have one possible motive; two have another. Then again, not everything is as it appears. Not everyone who has a motive kills. Not everyone without an alibi is guilty. Some suspects choose to keep their motives hidden. She and her partner have a real mire to work through and no one seems to want to help them. Most of the suspects have money and good lawyers. In general, all their lawyers advised their clients to keep their mouths shut.

As you can imagine, Leigh also has a past, one she’d prefer to forget. However, she learns her lessons well. She’s not about to repeat the errors of the past.
