I'm going to do whatever it takes to be with her, Special Agent Caleb Ellington thought as he sat alone in the master bedroom. His wife and daughter watched television downstairs while he sat in front of his computer screen, staring at sexy photographs of the Manhattan based paralegal he'd found on an online dating website. His family had no idea what he was up to. Caleb no longer considered them family anyway.

Horrific images flashed through his mind. They were the same flashbacks he'd seen for the past six months. He'd trusted his babysitter to take good care of his oldest daughter, only to watch the news in terror and see that she'd been killed in a car accident just outside of Las Vegas. The babysitter had died too but he didn't care much about her.

Now all he wanted was a new life. A life in which he had total control. Being an agent with the Drug Enforcement Agency allowed him to use surveillance equipment to track Zoe Porter's every move. He'd been able to watch her in real-time as she went to work every morning. The way she walked in her high heels and played with her hair sent shivers down his spine every day. It was only a matter of time before he was in a position to convince the classy lady to abandon her life and live with him forever.

Even if it meant they had to leave their current lives behind.

She was perfect. She was who he always wanted to be with. He hadn't really wanted to marry Jessica, let alone raise children. It had been a facade from the beginning, a move he'd made only to gain the respect of other agents who risked their lives every day and came home to their families every night. He'd had enough of the charade.

After spending a few months mourning his daughter's death, Caleb was ready to move on.

He logged into a computer program that allowed him access to private information regarding suspected drug criminals. He studied Zoe Porter's boyfriend and learned of his drug addiction. He'd have no trouble getting his plan to work.

Caleb shut off his computer, walked to the closet, and pulled out a few outfits. He picked out a few sweaters, a couple of pairs of dress pants, and one pair of jeans. He packed a few nice shirts and grabbed his DEA-issued handgun from the locked cabinet. Then he returned downstairs to the living room where his wife and daughter sat quietly.

They didn't speak to him. They didn't even make eye contact. He considered telling them where he was going. Ultimately, he said, “I'll be back” and left the house. The two ladies never uttered so much as a good-bye.

Caleb entered his vehicle and pulled out of the driveway. He headed for the nearby airport, making sure to take apart his cell phone and toss it out the window before he arrived at McCarran International. As his first-class flight was already booked, he quickly made his way through the terminal and boarded the plane.

Twenty minutes later he was in the air and on his way to New York. By the time the DEA—and Special Agent Todd Houston—knew what he was doing, he would be gone.

And Zoe Porter would be his.
