Grace Stoltzfus has loved Jacob Knepp since she was a child. When she meets an English man at the market place she is torn. When she sees Jacob with another young woman, she realizes she’s waited too long and Jacob has found someone else. Grace leaves her Amish community and marries the young English man who is soon deployed to Afghanistan. Once she’s alone Grace realizes she’s still in love with Jacob. She becomes a widow and finds out she’s going to be a mother on the same day. Grace returns home hoping to get back in the good graces of her community, will they forgive her?
