Carter is walking back to his family’s Bronx apartment when he is attacked by a man who bites him in the neck.

He wakes up in the alley the next day when his hand, which has fallen out into the sunlight, bursts into flames. He runs home but when he gets there he realizes that the burned flesh has already healed. Melody comes home from early and Carter realizes how hungry he is, but when he starts fantasizing about drinking her blood he runs away. He spends the day hiding out in the subway, only to be picked up by Eleanor - a beautiful woman who claims she can help him.
