Melanie Randell has no husband or lover in sight and has just found out if she ever wants a baby, she must get pregnant now. The only thing in her life she's been sure of is that she wants to have a child. Now, confronted with a medical condition that makes immediate pregnancy a necessity, she turns to her oldest friend, Bubba.
Bubba, a happy-go-lucky surfer, has known Melanie all her life, since her older brother brought him home to the Randell family when he was in third grade. He's watched Melanie grow up and has always thought of her as a little sister. But now he sees her pain at being denied the one thing she wants most in the world -- a baby. So he agrees to help her.
Both of them want this to be a very clear-cut relationship. They won't get involved, they won't make things messy. But neither of them count on feelings that begin to take over as they see each other first as lovers and then parents to a very special child . . .
