In Book One of The Painted Man, Jack dreams terrible dreams but also of a beautiful face. These conflicting images influence his life but devastate any hope of finding love. All Jack can do is run from the nightmare, hoping somewhere he will find peace. Moving on yet again, Jack settles in an unremarkable village, far from the life he is used to. When the face of his dreams touches this world, Jack's life changes in a way he never imagined; from a mysterious voice in his head to the discovery his history is the stuff of a dark and distorted fairytale. Jack learns the dreams, the voice and the woman all come from his past; a past he does not understand, a past he cannot recall.
