If you fell in love with someone else while you were engaged to a dying man, what would you do?

Cora Hartley, a forty-two year old woman living in Texas after the Civil War, has accomplished what she wanted most out of life. She has seen to it that her siblings are prospering and thriving with families of their own, and she has fulfilled her parents’ dying wishes. Now that this is finished, she can finally concentrate on herself, although she believes that her chance to become a mother has passed. Instead of living in a fantasy, she responds to the mail order bride ad of a much older man, sixty-eight year old William Forrest.

However, Cora could not know that this aloof man is also harboring a dark secret , one that could affect her life in a horrible way. In addition, she begins to realize that things are not what she’d expected at Roundhill Ranch, and nothing is going as she’d planned. She isn’t a bride yet, more like a nurse, and everything hangs in limbo for beautiful Cora even as she finally falls in love for the first time.

“During the time that you were corresponding with him, he developed an illness that will prove debilitating in the long run. I have counseled him about telling you he cannot proceed with his plans to marry you...”

Cora gasped. “Is it something infectious or communicable?” she asked, horrified.

“I’m afraid so, Miss Cora. Marrying him might threaten your own health…and life.”

Thirty-one year old Matthew Forrest has become accustomed to caring for his sick father, and welcomes the chance to see his father happy with a new bride. What he isn’t prepared for, however, is the fact that the beautiful woman is much nearer to his own age than his father’s, and they immediately strike up a close friendship. As his feelings turn into something much greater, he must battle with the emotions that rage within, telling him that what he feels for his father’s fiancée is terribly wrong.

Things are not going well at his beloved ranch, most of all for his dear father, and young Matthew must make some hard decisions during the coming days. First, he must find a way to help the ranch grow and be prosperous, and he enlists the help of Cora in this. Next, he must work to save his father’s life if possible. Finally, he must find a way to deal with the newfound love he has for the woman who is supposed to become his stepmother.

How will Cora handle her delicate situation?

What will Matthew do to conquer the forbidden love he feels?
