Romance with a twist...

Dodo birds! They really had no sense of reality!

“And I'm not a Dodo bird!” the creature continued, indignant. “Nor am I a turkey, nor a pterodactyl. I am a phoenix. Clearly. Though props to you for possessing such a creative mind.”

A phoenix. Of course. How could Sasha assume that the creature before her was a long-extinct animal, which at least had had the decency to actually exist at one point in time, when there was a whole slew of mythological creatures her mind hadn't immediately jumped to? An oversight on her part, surely.

Now it was Sasha's turn to shoot the creature an unimpressed look.

The one with the phoenix...

This short story is meant to be part of a collection of fairy tale-type stories for adults set in modern times, in other words “Modern Fairy Tales for the Fairy Tale Jaded”. They’re sassy, not entirely reverent and chock full of pop culture references. This is the third in a complete collection of stories of a similar ilk. Others in the collection are:

The Mermaid's Tale
There's a Centaur in My Barn
Date with a Fairy
