When Rose O’Riely’s husband is hung for treason because he was caught being involved in the Irish uprising in 1867, Rose vows to join the cause in order to avenge her husband’s death. However, Jason O’Malley the, the handsome owner of the manor, that her farm is on, takes her on as a ward to prevent her from doing that very thing. Rose, believing the half English and half Irish Jason O’Malley is more English than Irish, wishes only to escape the confines of the manor, where she is forced to live.

When she discovers a hidden door that leads to the outside of the manor, she finds her escape and joins with the rebels at night, disguised as a young boy. There she ends up getting involved with the masked leader of the group only known as Jamie, who is the kind of Irish man she respects.

When Jason discovers her involvement with the group, but can’t discover how she manages to leave the manor at night, he goes to drastic lengths, to try and stop her. But Rose will not let Jason prevent her from joining the rebels. Her struggles between Jason, who wants to keep her from getting involved, and Jamie, whom she is sure she is in love with, even though she has never seen his face, causes her to discover there is more to her predicament than meets the eye.
