Penny Carr is thirty-six and newly widowed, her husband and two children taken during a house fire that destroyed much of what she owned. Grief has nearly swallowed the pretty widow, so much so that she makes the decision to head West and start a new life with her old friend Hannah. Remembering their special friendship, she knows that it will be just the change she needs in order to heal from her devastating pain.

Upon her arrival in hot and dusty Nevada, Penny realizes that she has found much more than the rekindling of an old friendship. Her friend Hannah has everything a woman could want, from a nice home to close-knit in-laws and children. Penny will have many distractions from her grief, including a handsome stranger who happens to share her late husband’s first name.

Hannah looked down at the letter from the pastor. “I don’t know. It seems too much of a coincidence for me. It’s true that Penny has just lost her family, but…well, you may be just the thing she needs. A loving and kind gentleman to help her through her pain.”

“Just one problem, though.” Her eyes filled with tears again.

“What’s that?”

She sighed. “Her husband’s name was Joe.”

Joe Holbrook, thirty-one and hoping to see the turn of the century with a bride by his side, has decided to write to a pastor back East in the hope of finding the same success as his brothers have found. Mail order brides are common now, and each of his brothers has discovered the love of his life after writing the short, simple ad. Joe doesn’t want to be alone anymore; he wants to share his farm and his heart with someone.

When he hears of Penny’s loss, he knows that it’s much too soon to request courtship from the pretty widow. However, he puts off his plan to write and request a bride until he has a chance to get to know her better and see where things go. She is everything he’s ever wanted, but he must first become her friend.

Will Penny’s mourning last so long that she misses a chance for love anew?

How can Joe help to heal Penny’s broken heart so that she can see his love for her?
