”When a gal has dark circles around her eyes, looks plum exhausted, and can’t keep her vittles down, I say she’s got a bun in the oven. I know you’ve promised to marry her, but you’d best make sure that you’re going to keep to those intentions”…

Texas is short of women and Jack, a thirty-year old cowboy, wants to settle down. So despite his misgivings he goes through with the wedding. His bride, Etta, doesn’t want to speak of her past but she’s not ready to be a complete wife to Jack either. In the midst of the coldest winter that Texas has ever experienced, Jack wonders if he’s condemned to a marriage as cold as the weather that’s devastating the cattle herds. When Jack returns home he finds that Etta may be losing the baby that he didn’t father, and he realizes that his feelings for her and the baby have changed.
