Time is running out on Harry English's dream of becoming a novelist. A 54-year-old journalist, he often stares at a portrait of Nathaniel Hawthorne in his home and ponders the fact that his literary idol died at 60. After years of deadline stress, Harry figures he's on a similar trajectory, and he dreads the thought of shuffling off without having penned a single great American novel.
Then, out of the blue, Harry gets a Facebook friend request from a woman from Germany. An uncannily kindred spirit, Maria Chopin immediately recognizes the artist in her new pen pal's soul. And before he's even seen the woman shrouded behind the golden curtain in her profile photo, Harry falls in love.
One problem: He loves his wife, too. So Harry has big decisions to make. And with his old humdrum life spiraling out of control, Harry decides to turn his wild and crazy new life into a book.
He doesn't know how it will end. But it could take him across the Atlantic if he accepts an invitation to come finish his novel in Maria's flat. And if he follows that inexplicable something telling him what to write, the tale could take us anywhere. … Maybe back to a World War II German POW camp in the Kansas Flint Hills. … Perhaps to a place called Sleepy Hollow, where Hawthorne found his Hester Prynne. … Possibly toward a startling conclusion that ties all of them together.
