Jane: I met him when I was seventeen and fell in love with straight away. He was tall and handsome and made me feel like a woman for the first time in my life. But then my father died and I had to take over his business, and I told him I didn't have time for him. He wouldn't let me go though and I had to tell him in no uncertain terms that it was over. What chance would we have had anyway, he was an Earl and I the daughter of a middle-class man who owned a shipping business. I won't deny it hurt to leave him, but it was best that way.

Michael: It was all going so well until her father died. I loved her so much, everything about her. I met her one day when I went for a walk in the harbour and it went from there into something great and something I was prepared to give up my inheritance for. Then, out of the blue, she told me that I she didn't want me anymore. Can you imagine how I felt? But I wasn't giving up, she would have to prove she didn't want me, really prove it, it wasn't enough to blame her father's death because I was there for her. But prove it she did, not by any great deed, but by consistent denial that we could be together. In the end I had no choice but to respect her wishes. But it didn't get easier with time, just more dreadful. I couldn't look at other women, none of them was good enough. In the end I went travelling to India and hoped one day, she would change her mind.
