It was half past eleven when the Duke finally left the house, and the Duchess immediately rose from the empty dinner table, getting up and walking across the hall to his study. She knew that he would not leave any signs of his debts out in the room, but she knew that he must have acknowledgements of his wager, or claims for his debts. If she could find those, then she would have a better idea about what to do in order to save the town house and recover her status with the shopkeepers.
She approached the large desk in the study with trepidation. It had not always been that way. At the beginning of the relationship, she had felt as though she could do anything with him. He had been older than her, of course, and her mother had said that he was ‘charmed’ by the young woman.
