1882 – Merrimack County
“Miss Dora when are you going to answer one of these ads for a husband? A fine woman like you should’ve been snapped up to be a wife long before now.”
Dora May Marple had long given up hope of being a wife, but Gunter’s teasing caused her to take a second glance at the Matrimonial News. Dora knew that she was as plain and ordinary as dishwater, except for the scars on her hands and arms. The scars were outward reminders that she was not just an orphan, but a survivor and a servant.
She was drawn to an ad placed by a mail order groom with a similar past. He was a New York Orphan turned Texas Rancher. Amos Otterstrom’s scars are hidden from view, but he bears the scars of his orphaned life on his fragile heart. He was an orphan train rider who was never chosen because of his red hair and pale face. Will he be repulsed by Dora’s scars?
Will these lonely hearts overcome heartache and tragedy to finally find a family at the end of a train ride?
