Penelope: After my father died, my mother and I decided I should go and live with a woman called Mary. She was in a higher social class than us and I could learn a lot from from her. She took me on as her companion and we got on well. One day she decided she would take me to London to see some of her husbands family. Her husband was a soldier in the army and she lived in Yorkshire while he ran around the world fighting. While he was away she often went to London, and now was no exception. After a difficult start I got friendly with Alice their daughter. She was the one who took me to a ball and introduced me to a pianist called Martin.

Martin: I have no idea how I could still want to go to Germany and play piano, after my parents had been killed. Despite my sister coming home and trying to look after me, I was devastated. My parents had been simply wonderful and with them I had everything I wanted. Still, I decided to go to Germany and risk my reputation.
