Paper Airplanes (A Short Story) (Kindle Single)
This story was originally published in Day One, a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction and poetry from emerging writers.
By the time he’s admitted to the hospital, Horace hasn’t slept for a week. Once released, he and his boyfriend decide to take a break from the drugs that have been keeping them up. That is, until they receive an insurance check meant for the hospital—a check with Horace’s name on it and a whole lot of zeros.
When the insurer discovers the mistake and threatens to report them for fraud unless they return the money, the young men turn to their drug dealer for help. But instead of leading them toward a solution, this decision turns out to be one more irrevocable misstep in a long, doomed descent.
Told by Horace’s boyfriend in a desperate attempt to assuage his much-deserved guilt, Paper Airplanes is both divertingly funny and unavoidably tragic.
