Angel Face by Cameron May
Isolated near a tiny Scottish cove and destitute when her father dies, Fleur and her mother Hannah are at the mercy of a ruthless landholder. During a storm when the rent holder comes to collect his payment in the only trade Hannah has, Fleur, sent away, saves a man's life from the savage sea and earns a chance to make a new life for herself and her mother.
Running for their lives from their past, they eventually find work in an eccentric but acclaimed English artist's household. Sir Clarence, the master, doesn't hire women. However, Hasty, his majordomo, is desperate for a cook and takes them on but hides their gender. Meanwhile, the man whom Fleur saved has given up looking for her, though she has been the means of his becoming a Scottish laird. He hires Sir Clarence to produce a painting and comes to collect it. The master, after throwing out Fleur when he discovers her sex then rehires her for a desperate want of a good cook, comes to know and like Fleur. Invited to the laird's wedding, Sir Clarence takes Fleur along. At the laird's castle, Sir Clarence's coming changes all their futures.
