When Elise Sinclair’s parents die of a fever, she is sent to live with her cousin Grace Warren and Grace’s stepmother and stepsisters and is immediately put to work as their servant. The only reason she stays there is to be near to her cousin but Elise cannot wait until she and her cousin can leave Warren Manor.
When her employer, the cruel Lady Barbara Warren is invited to a house-party, Elise goes along to attend to the women as their maid.

Soon she meets the handsome Duke of Braeburn who does not know she is a servant and she begins to fall in love, but knows nothing can come of it.
But Elise suddenly realises she has a Fairy Godmother in the shape of the indomitable Dowager Duchess of Braeburn, who intends to make sure Elise attends the ball, even if she has to go in disguise.

Grace Warren is a shy and timid girl, who is too scared to stand up to her formidable stepmother Lady Barbara Warren.
However, when Grace is invited to attend a house party, she meets the Earl of Rockingham who is both handsome and rich and soon her courage has returned and she begins to hope that she might just have found the man she could love.
