Alice Morgan may be a teacher, but she's no schoolmarm. She has a convenient downtown apartment, a new ring from her rich doctor boyfriend, and a job she loves educating young minds at a modern high school (by 1952 standards). Just as she thinks she knows exactly where her life is going, she receives a frantic phone call that catapults her back to the tiny farming community she left behind ten years earlier.
Returning home to care for her mother, Faith, who has been disabled by a stroke, Alice finds herself facing many challenges. Her mother seems to resent any help Alice tries to offer, her fiance is becoming more and more distant, and she desperately wants to return to her teaching. As she struggles through these trials and begins her new job teaching at the local schoolhouse, she receives help and friendship from Bruce, her mother's outcast neighbor. Although Faith despises him, Alice begins to see past Bruce's frightfully loud motorcycle, dilapidated house, and crude language and finds in him a new best friend—and maybe even more.
