Charlotte has left Britain for France in early 1939 to attend university in Paris while staying at her grandmother's estate. France and the rest of Europe are about to be caught in the grip of Hitler and the Nazi war machine. At university, Charlotte becomes infatuated with a charming, young German engineer, Manfried. The imminent invasion of France by the Nazis places Manfried and Charlotte in a precarious situation. With their world and relationship turned upside down, Manfried and Charlotte must endure the carnage of war and make desperate choices out of love and survival.
