To protect them from encroaching rebel forces, the Chongzhen Emperor (1611-1644) managed to kill every female member of his royal household, except for Princess Shiva, the youngest, whom he left for dead, before hanging himself from a tree by the neck. A young Ming general scooped the small child up and escaped to live in hiding where General Candelario and Princess Shiva now live as pirates.

Fast forward ten years--

Now the first mate to Captain Saif T. Smew, Candelario plots for the day a return to their Chinese homeland will be possible. A mutiny onboard Amazing Grace found Captain Smew and the only loyal members of his crew, marooned and left to die. Pitted against nature's overt dangers and his own long list of imperfections, he happens upon a legendary and cursed treasure map. Assisted by his fellow marooned shipmates, including Amadahy, a half Wampanoag former galley slave, Smew is led to discover something perhaps more valuable than all the gold and diamonds in the world.

This series of young adult books is being created to give young people a more positive role model than what is typically seen coming from Hollywood today. Slowly but surely our protagonist undergoes a refining process as he is confronted with each of the seven deadly sins, sins we are all faced with each day of our lives.

It was brought to the author's attention that picture books are helpful to those individuals with significant reading challenges as the images help the reader to maintain focus and to magnify comprehension.

Many have asked the meaning of Smew. A smew is a type of duck that if one does one's research, one will learn of an animal that migrates great distances, is monogamous, and is a beautiful creature.
