When Laura Fitzwilliam is told, by her grandmother, of a lost treasure belonging to her family, she is most intrigued. When she takes the position of companion to the cantankerous Roberta Montague, whose home the gems are suspected to be hidden, she did not plan on becoming attached to the old lady. Nor did she expect to be attracted to the Earl of Somerton, Roberta's grandson. As things become more difficult and Laura begins to feel guilty, she is determined to find the jewels as soon as possible before she can no longer deny her attraction to the only man she has ever wanted.

Nathan Montague, the Earl of Somerton, is summoned home by his grandmother on the pretence of a problem with the estate. Before he even arrives home, he knows he is going to be pressured into marriage by the old lady. However, when he meets his grandmother’s new companion, he is immediately attracted to her. He finds himself spending more and more time on his estate and less in London.

As time goes on, Nathan becomes suspicious of just why Laura Fitzwilliam is really here, and he is determined to find out what she is hiding. As the young woman takes over the running of the household he begins to think that it might be time he took a wife after all, and the only one who will do for that role is the woman that has stolen his heart.
