The Baron Elopes at Christmas takes place in Somerset and London during the winter of 1812. A baron's daughter from Somerset, Elizabeth Rosemond, was introduced to Lord Dalton, a handsome young baron, at her debutante ball in London. She's certainly not a bluestocking: she's simply been educated as well as any man living. If she hadn't been driven off her father's estate, she wouldn't have come to London. Lord Dalton, the handsome young baron, is astonished at her complete self-assurance. How could any lady be indifferent or hostile to him?
The novella shows the growth of their love and respect for one another. An important sub-plot concerns the Somerset feasting of the orchards on 12th Night and the Welsh Mari Lwyd. Dances, such as the scandalous Viennese waltz, are also an important platform for the unfolding of this mysterious and magical romance.
