By the time Lance finds Maggie a third time, he’s learned she doesn’t trust her feelings for him or trust the good things he shows or believe that his goodness will last. In fact, she wants no part of his money or the prestige of being his wife. So if he wants to win her, he’s going to have to teach her the difference between past experience a true love.

Due to her lack of an education and past experiences of a terrible home life, Maggie runs away as a means of coping. She doesn’t know what real love is like, and in spite of her pregnancy, refuses to even consider marriage to Lance under any circumstances.
