Conspiracy theorists have inexplicably begun targeting regional newspaper reporter Jessica Flynn, who often appears on national talk shows as a voice of rural America. Jessica suspects that freelance journalist and rival Tara Huber is behind the plot to discredit her. Meanwhile, Jessica's Christmas party at her family ranch in southeastern New Mexico sours when it appears her photographer, Feather Monet, has been shot and killed during an epic snowstorm in the desert region.

Jessica then learns that her brother Zach and friends have been feeding a wild mountain lion that unfortunately has eaten the evidence. The kids strive to save the animal from destruction while Jessica teams up with federal agent Luke Marsh to track down a murder suspect in a deep wilderness cave on the nearby salt flats. Too late they learn that the cave scientists who have volunteered to help them might themselves be involved in something nefarious.

While they are cut off from civilization in the crucible of the monstrous cave, Jessica and Luke are horrified to see members of their search party being killed one by one.

To save herself and the survivors, Jessica must once against rely on "spooky powers" and the three quirky apparitions that she jokingly calls figments of her imagination...
