Dissent ran rampant during the reign of Peter the Great during the early part of the eighteenth century. Several families feared for their lives, including Mara's family. Should Peter the Great's secret police find out about their plans to leave, they knew that execution could be eminent.
During their fearful escape they plotted to cross the Bering Strait into Alaska, a land they knew nothing about. Taking their families with small children, they found that the treacherous mountains were impossible to cross as they planned. Fortunately they came across an Eskimo guide who led them part of the way.
The story unfolds telling the hopes and heartaches they endure riding rafts and walking against almost impossible odds as the group of travelers find their way all the way to North America looking for the land where the climate was warmer and the 'grass grew to their waist.'
