Here Without You by Richard Price
Daniel's friends don't understand why he's single, after all, he's only thirty years old, good looking and caring. To them his life seems lonely and unfulfilling and, if he's honest, it can feel that way to him too; the rainy town in Devon where he lives seeming like a hinterland where he is waiting for his real life to start. And he is sure that it will start, so he treads water, his social life dissipating as his friends become husbands and fathers, leaving him at home on Friday nights with just his books and computer for company.
And that is where he meets Sofia. Not on a dating site but, in a moment of melancholy over years gone by, on an online pen pal site, a place where people look for friendship not love. But that is what he finds, love, in the shape of the beautiful Muslim woman from North Carolina who says she has trouble sleeping and who wakes in the early hours to email him.
They both know that this is their chance at love and happiness, but how many challenges is life going to throw at them? And how long can either of them wait to be together before one of them decides that an online, mixed faith relationship in the 21st century is too difficult to maintain? Or will love win the day and see them with the person they were meant to be with?
