Yo Mama's On Crack Rock: Episode 1 by Quan Millz
On Chicago’s South Side, there’s a story that needs to be a told. A story about the life so many had and will have. This is a raw and real saga about the unending trials and tribulations that define the everyday fabric of existence for so many struggling, working-class Black people just trying to simply make it.

Sandra Mabry is a single mother of three boys, rearing them all alone as she works her behind off at the Post Office. Kenny, the oldest son, is on the cusp of graduating high school and going off to college to chase his dreams; but his life meets a tragic end in a shooting.

The crushing pain of losing her eldest is unbearable for Ms. Sandra. But within months, the family is met with another tragedy. Her youngest son, Khayri, ends up an innocent bystander of a drive-by shooting in the neighborhood. Baby boy manages to survive, but his life is altered. The shooting leaves the boy with severe brain injuries, making him mute and partly paralyzed.

Between the mounting bills, taking care of a disabled son and still managing to rear another son who silently rages in depression, Sandra finds herself succumbing to an addiction to painkillers and marijuana to soothe her deep pain. Nonetheless, her addiction catches up with her and Sandra’s family further falls apart. Her life spirals out of control and now Mama is forced to figure out how to not just rebuild her family, but to also rebuild hope and love for herself.

YO MAMA’S ON CRACK ROCK is a powerful, visual glimpse into the everyday struggles of a vast majority of Black people, particularly Black women, looking to raise a family in the inner-city.

This is Episode 1 of a multi-episode series.
