Rachel's death has a detrimental affect on those who knew and loved her.

Her cousin Christina Norfolk returns from France with the intention of seeking revenge for Rachel's death. With this in mind she embarks on an affair with Rachel's lover James.

Christina meets Rachel's one time confidant Carlisle and together they embark on a dangerous journey to Naseby the results of which have a catastrophic and long-lasting effect on her.

Françoise Hanover attempts to emulate her sister but she is not successful.

The story moves to Essex where amid the activities of smugglers Christina's enemies search for her. With danger all about them an escape back to France beckons and Christina's farewell is accompanied by declarations which will change the lives of her and James forever.
