Short Story

Dear Diary,

It’s been nine whole months and I’m anxious and scared of what the future might bring. Tomorrow is the BIG DAY. In the next few hours, my husband will be taking me to the hospital, so that Dr. Jane can deliver our baby. For nine months, he’s been walking around here like he’s sitting on top of the world, yet it’s still hard for me to believe that this baby may not be his. One night of ecstasy could lead to my untimely demise if Carl ever finds out what I’ve been hiding.

Carl has been trying so hard to be the husband that I need. He has really gone above and beyond for any and everything that I want, just to make sure that me and the baby are good. It fills my heart with joy to see how happy he is, but I’m really broken inside for what I’ve done to him. As far as I’m concerned, this baby is his. Sleeping with Rashad was a huge mistake and had I known I would be in this predicament now, I never would’ve done it.

Sadly, I can’t take my thoughts completely off Rashad, because it’s a part of me that feels like he’s still here. Could that be through my baby? I disconnected my burner phone and cut off all ties with him. I even shop in different counties, just to make sure that I steer clear as much as possible. I never wanted to hide something as big as this from anybody, but the circumstances surrounding it are much too big not to. I don’t know what this will do to my husband, but I do know that it will ultimately tear our family apart.

Sincerely, SHANI
