Ankle Deep: A romantic comedy of errors set in the English countryside by Angela Thirkell
Fanny Turner is determined to find Valentine a wife. Unfortunately the attractive holiday guest is already married...

Fanny Turner's favourite pastime is endeavouring to provide "a succession of possible brides" for her husband’s former schoolfriend, the charming, if not especially eligible, Valentine Ensor. Fanny’s misguided attempts at matchmaking produce a dizzying tangle of romantic mishaps when holiday guests show up with an attractive — yet very married — daughter in tow...

Ankle Deep is one of acclaimed author Angela Thirkell’s earliest novels. With wit and sophistication, we are welcomed to her fictional stretch of English countryside, a magical landscape spirited with good people going about the business of life, irresistibly entertaining in their determination to misunderstand each other.

Praise for Ankle Deep :
'The charm is in the light touch, the delicate probing of character and sparkle of wit' - New York Herald Tribune

'Thirkell…has a great flair for lampooning, in the deftest possible way, social customs and certain types of people… [Her] brilliant, easy, conversational…style carries the reader along in a glow of pleasure' - Saturday Review of Literature
