A New Moon for Emily (Nova Scotia series)

Emily McAllen, a gal in her late 20s, holds a dull librarian job. All her life her dad has kept her under his thumb. She can't cut her hair; she can only drive dignified Buicks. Em longs to escape to St. John's Island off the coast of Nova Scotia. When shes saved more money she'll move there and live with her gram in her huge, rose-colored Victorian house.
Gram dies suddenly and to the family's extreme displeasure the house is left to Emily. Her dad is livid; her Aunt Sylvia threatens to sue. Em quietly defies her father when she quits her job, trades her Buick for a purple Volkswagon and heads for St.
Johns Island.
Much as she misses Gram she finds her island life exciting, except for the letters Aunt Sylvia's lawyer son Randy writes demanding that Em hand over the house. Word is that Randy hasn't managed to pass the bar exam.
Emily renews old friendships from her childhood visits and is dating Mike, Jared and even Peter. Island gossip says Peter got the postmisstress's young daughter pregnant and there's a hasty wedding. That leaves Jared, a lobster fisherman and local handyman, who is desperately in love with her. But Jared has no money saved and feels he must support his mother. Mike, the happy-go-lucky ferry boat pilot, is just plain fun and isn't interested in making long-range plans.
When Em needs a way to earn a living she makes her big house into a bed and breakfast. Her Dad tries to quash that idea but Em, who is wise as her grandmother was, quietly goes ahead with her plans.
The island folk come to her for advice but who will council Emily as she works toward the future?
