The Gardens of Marguerite by J.R. Tompkins
Marguerita escapes her career in New York to return to the tropical “off-the-tourist-and-trade-route” island of her childhood after a string of broken relationships and the death of her mother.

At the local market, she meets her neighbor Savio, a mysterious, guitar-plucking contractor who helps with her fallen tree problem, invades her home with a pile of new neighbors, and upon sending her a rose, nearly kills a homeless young flower vendor named Antoníto. Her efforts to mentor this budding young entrepreneur clash against the plans of the calculating Padre Francisco of the old Mission of San Carlos.

Accompanied by Savio, ’Níto, a few new friends, and boisterous neighbors, Marguerita uncovers family mysteries in a romantic seaside village harboring magical and perilous secrets. Losing herself to the beauty and romance of its enchanted beaches and dunes, she swims at dawn to barrier islands with Antoníto, holds morning chats with her host Berta over coffee, cooks joyously musical meals with local villagers, shares outdoor lessons with her young summer students, and skinny-dips with Savio in lagoons aglow with effervescence.

Will Marguerita and Savio survive the tropical storm headed their way? Can Marguerita find the healing she so desperately seeks?
