Clarice Cranberry is a school teacher in a small Vermont town. Though several of her students are struggling with the basics, she feels she will be able to break through to them if she is consistent with her methods.

But when the leader of the school board fires her, Clarice knows she has to figure out something else, and fast. Out of desperation, she decides to answer an ad as a mail order bride, and ends up in the Dakota Territory.

The house is beyond anything she could ever imagine, but her groom-to-be is quiet and reserved. When he asks her to give up what matters most to her in life, she begins to wonder if she has made a mistake.
