The Secret of the Clams by Jean L. Kuhnke
Lian returned home from her first solo business trip to Nashville to discover that some vandals destroyed her home and place of business. She ran a laundry service started by the people that took her in as a street urchin when she was ten. They were oriental and eventually chased out of town because of it. Leaving Lian to continue the small business, she was now faced with nothing.
She was not the only one in Paulson Trace to have problems. Emil just lost his wife and needed someone to care for his one month old son. Being forced together out of necessity, they did what they had to in order to survive.
