This third book features Lily Shrock, the head cook at Kauffman's Kitchen. Lily has kept herself hidden away as much as she can all of her life, ever since she was first teased in the playground for the large birthmark across half of her face. The stain only grows darker as she ages, and there’s little that can be done about it – even less that her family could afford. Lily has learned to live with it, and she’s also concluded that she’s going to be alone for the rest of her life, even though she's been seeing a young man named Malachi, although he's given her no indication that he wants to marry. Who would want a disfigured wife? She's not so sure she loves him either. She’s just fine with her job as cook at the restaurant - hidden away where no one has to see her.

But when a storm blows in collapsing part of the restaurant’s roof and damaging the kitchen, Lily finds herself coming face to face with all kinds of strangers as workers come to repair the damages.
