Alexandra “Alex” Fisher has very little say in her choices for life. With a narcissistic, controlling father who holds her in contempt, she has learned to comply with any request just to keep the peace, including agreeing to marry his ideal candidate for her husband. They share the same faith, the same socioeconomic status, and have all the same friends. When her father sends her from her home in Connecticut to babysit her troublesome cousin, Alex feels powerless to say no despite having other plans and priorities. Her cousin takes off within the first week and Alex finds her in a local honky-tonk. When they go to fetch her, Jonathan “Jon” Dixon steps in and protects Alex from an unwelcome advance from a drunk cowboy.
Jon took the mall project in Nashville as a way to spend two years healing away from the family he loves so much. Very much the prodigal, about six months from completion of the project, he realizes how far off the path he's fallen and works to repair his relationship with God before he goes home to repair his relationship with his family. A news story sends him back into a tailspin, and before long, he finds himself in a honky-tonk with instructions for the barmaid to keep the pitcher full.
Jon and Alex share a mutual attraction. She decides to take control of her life at the same time he seeks something to help him forget a trauma in his past. They both end up making bad decisions that come with permanent consequences that night.
Back in New York when Alex stands up to her father about protecting her unborn child, he retracts her trust fund, closes her bank accounts, applies influence to her employers, and evicts her from her apartment. Alone, pregnant, and cut off, Alex can do nothing more than go to Atlanta and hope that Jon can help her.
Upon her arrival, Alex discovers Jon is not the poor blue-collar construction worker she assumed. She feels betrayed. However, his family's zest for life, love for Christ, and deep respect for each other soon show her how much was missing from her life before. She soon finds herself falling in love with Jon, but doesn't think he'll believe her feelings are genuine. Jon knows he's fallen in love with Alex but doesn't know how to convey it to her in a way that will resonate with her.
Can these two broken people cling to each other and learn to connect with Christ, or will all their individual baggage destroy their marriage before it even has a chance to get off the ground?
