The Fitzgeralds finds themselves working on the border between two warring countries. When tragedy strikes the family, Alice Fitzgerald must hold them together. With the help of her children; Thomas, George, and Elizabeth; Tony, an orphan from Cumberland; and David Windover, a disillusioned Confederate soldier, they will face the dangers presented by the war, nature, and the railroad together.

Between Rail and River

As the Fitzgerald family struggles to make it through the winter of 1862-63, the Civil War draws closer. George's unexpected return from the war pits him against David, an ex-Confederate spy. Alice Fitzgerald struggles to hold her family together as a vindictive sheriff and a haughty doctor's wife work to tear them apart. Tony has found a life aboard the Freeman, but Sheriff Lee Whittaker has other ideas for the ex-thief. Elizabeth finds herself torn between canal life, nursing war wounded, and becoming a Washington society lady.

Lock Ready

The Civil War split the United States, and now it has split the Fitzgerald Family. Although George has returned from the war, his sister Elizabeth remains in Washington working as a nurse. David has given up on his dream of being with Alice and is trying to move on with his life.

Having endured death and loss already, Alice wonders whether remaining on the canal is worth the cost. She wants her family reunited, but she can’t reconcile her feelings for David and her love for her dead husband.

Tony, has his own questions he is trying to answer. As he tries to find out more about his birth parents, he stumbles onto a plan by Confederate sympathizers to sabotage the canal. He enlists David’s help to try to disrupt the plot before it endangers his new family, but first they have to find out who is behind the plot.

Lost Life

David is a happy man. He has a wife and children he loves and a baby on the way. Then the father who disowned him because David left the Confederate Army shows. David's older brother has died, and Benjamin Windover wants David to return to Virginia and take over the plantation. David is content working on the canal, but this is a chance to give his family a better life. However, is it really a better life or just a different one?

The Race

In a drunken celebration of his 20th birthday, canaller Tony makes a stupid boast and an even stupider bet. He will race his canal boat against a Baltimore & Ohio Railroad train. If Tony loses the race, he will watch the canal boat he doesn't even own become firewood in a railroader's fireplace. Tony and Thomas must figure out a way to give their boat a chance. In the days leading up to the race, it becomes more of a competition between canallers and railroaders who don't need another reason to not like each other. The pressure is on for Tony to win an impossible race.
